Background:
Em-Net is a charity funded school which started in 2008.
It is located in Katanga, a slum half a mile from the city
of Kampala. It is the largest slum in the city with over
60,000 inhabitants. The aim of the school is to provide
education to children of the urban poor families living
in the slums. Many of the children are orphans due to AIDS
and other natural calamities living with relatives or other
families. Majority of the parents can not afford the expensive
city schools leaving their children without education.
The
Em-net school is currently providing education to 186 children
in nursery through third grade. The school now employs nine
teachers and a maintenance/security person. Current needs
are expansion of facilities to incorporate upper classes.
Finish building, desks, chairs, school supplies, books,
administration/teacher cost etc. are needed.
Currently
we were able to receive funds to put a sorely needed roof
for the school. However, the work is far from completion.
Cement floor, plaster walls, as well as, the exterior, along
with additional latrines for children are also needed.
The
current facility is already over crowded and is in need
of another building to accommodate more children. The school
has to turn kids away with already crowed conditions. The
director of the school Emmanuel is doing all he can to meet
the demanding needs.
N4H
goals are to help with capacity building and develop a school
curriculum with an educational methodology using evidence
base teaching techniques and skills. Also build a new addition
to the current school to meet the expansion needs.
